FAYETTE, Iowa (November 5, 2018) – Upper Iowa University cordially invites the public to attend its annual Veterans Day program on Monday, November 12. UIU alumnus and Iowa Army National Guard Major Philip Turner ’08 will serve as guest speaker. Turner is a veteran of Desert Storm and Operation Enduring Freedom and currently serves as the National Guard education service officer.
To coincide with the Veterans Day program, the University is recognizing the Eternal Flame for Peace at Fayette Campus. The Eternal Flame for Peace was originally installed on the west side of UIU’s Garbee Hall in May 1971 in honor of former UIU faculty member Frank Jones. The memorial was recently relocated from the west side of UIU’s Garbee Hall to the Reflective Tribute Veterans Memorial at Fayette Campus.
According to University Archives, Frank Jones began serving as a professor of English and philosophy at UIU in 1958. Prior to his arrival at Fayette Campus, Jones started out as a Broadway actor. A native of New Brighton, Pennsylvania, he appeared in the original cast of “Student Prince” and Irving Berlin’s “Music Box Review,” and played the title role in “Manhattan Mayor.” Jones served nearly 10 years in the Army, including service in a World War II cavalry division. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida Southern College in the 1950s.
With over 25 years of active service in veterans’ groups, the popular faculty member was recognized by the Campus Veterans Club in the 1971 ceremony outside of Garbee Hall by having the Eternal Flame for Peace lit in his name. Jones was further honored by lighting the flame himself.
UIU President William R. Duffy will provide the welcome address during the 2018 Veterans Day program, which is scheduled to begin at 12:15 p.m. in the Student Center ballrooms at UIU’s Fayette Campus. Fayette American Legion Post 339 will present the colors. Billy Noecker, a U.S. Navy veteran and UIU Student Veteran’s Club president, will serve as master of ceremonies. The senior from Waukon, Iowa, is majoring in elementary education.
